Every Artist has stylistic tendencies that are unique to them.  What I’m trying to do is different than developing a signature method of rendering what I see.  Instead, I’m trying to create my own little world that has it’s own visual language and rules that are undeniably me.  This approach to painting usually leads to the conclusion that I work directly from my imagination (which is not exactly true).  The visual nexus of my paintings comes from my studio’s vast source of photographs, sketches, collages, books, music, and movies.  The original inspiration is only a catalyst for the painting process to transcend it from simple sketch to complex artwork.
I also feel that I would not be able to even attempt to create my own visual language without a voracious appetite for other art.  Some of the most influential artists for me are:  Richard Wilson, Joseph Turner, Richard Diebenkorn, Mark Rothko, Patrick Surgalski, Francisco Goya, Jackson Pollack, Helen Frankenthaler, Francis Bacon, Karl Benjamin, Basquiat, Darren Watterston, and a little bit of German Expressionist in there as well (I can’t help it, it’s in my blood).
